CKUW 95.9, UMFM 101.5 and Sweet Spot Productions present Agape Table For Kids â a benefit concert, Monday, May 12th, 2008.
On November 24, 1989, the House of Commons unanimously passed a resolution to seek to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among Canadian children by the year 2000. At 11.7%, the child poverty rate is exactly the same as it was in 1989.
2007 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada
Agape Table was established in 1980 to serve free hot meals to people in the inner city of Winnipeg and, 28 years later, is still serving a hot meal at the breakfast hour Monday to Friday all year round. It is a not-for-profit organization that receives no public funding from the United Way. It is supported entirely by private donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.
Agape Table For Kids is a new specialized high nutrition program for preschool children. It provides a well-balanced diet and three meals a day seven days a week for each infant to preschool child in the program. It is unique in Canada.
Currently, there are 30 children enrolled. Daily food costs amount to approximately $8 per child. There is a growing waiting list. These children are unable to access school or other programs and their only available alternative to the Agape Table For Kids program is the soup kitchen which doesnât offer food specific to their age group and is an unpleasant environment for a child.
On Monday, May 12th, Bill Klysh, local musician and concerned father of two and Sweet Spot Productions are putting on a benefit concert in support of the Agape Table For Kids program. Media and event sponsors include CKUW 95.9, UMFM 101.5, Shaw TV Cable 9, Stylus Magazine, The Uniter, Backstage Winnipeg, Avenue Four Communications, Into The Music, Movie Village, Music Trader and Chatters. Tracy Koga of Shaw TV âBackstageâ will host the evening at Academy Food Drinks Music, 437 Stradbrook Avenue in Osborne Village.
